Our office, as well as the The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP), the American Dental Association (ADA), and the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry (AAPD) all recommend establishing a "Dental Home" for your child by one year of age. Children who have a dental home are more likely to receive appropriate preventive and routine oral health care.
The Dental Home is intended to provide a place other than the Emergency Room for parents.
You can make the first visit to the dentist enjoyable and positive. If old enough, your child should be informed of the visit and told that the dentist and their staff will explain all procedures and answer any questions. The less to-do concerning the visit, the better.
It is best if you refrain from using words around your child that might cause unnecessary fear, such as "needle", "shot", "pull", "drill" or "hurt". The office makes a practice of using words that convey the same message, but are pleasant and non-frightening to the child.
During your initial visit, we will review your child's medical and dental history and address any concerns you have about your child's teeth. Every child is different so this will occur by the way best suited for YOUR child. They may be lying on top of the parent as the parent is reclined in the chair or if your child is comfortable they can even be in the chair by themselves. But remember, parents are ALWAYS welcome back for treatment, and together we will gauge how to best accommodate your child to make this important visit the most comfortable one possible. We strive to make your child’s dental experience as ENJOYABLE as possible. They are given a menu of choices with flavored gloves, flavorful toothpastes, and yummy fluorides. The children are engaged in their own treatment from the start. It’s our goal to create a child friendly atmosphere from their first step through our front door (where they see the VIDEO GAMES and TV’s waiting for them), to their last step out (laden down with a GOODY BAG and TOYS for the trip home). They are entertained with MOVIES in each room and cared for by an experienced child friendly staff and doctors. If your child is ready, we will clean their teeth and apply a topical fluoride. We will demonstrate effective brushing and flossing techniques for your child. One of our pediatric dentists will examine your child’s teeth and discuss any findings with you along with any treatment recommendations.
