Icon Resin Infiltration Q & A

What are white spot lesions?

White spot lesions (WSLs) appear as noticeable white lines, streaks, or spots on the surface of your child’s tooth enamel. Although many different factors can contribute to the development of WSLs, ranging from nutritional deficiencies to excess fluoride ingestion, WSLs that develop during orthodontic treatment are a result of demineralization.

Tooth enamel can become decalcified in areas where plaque and bacteria aren’t properly removed during daily brushing and flossing. This is a common problem for teens with traditional wire-and-bracket braces, which can be difficult to keep clean and clear of food debris and liquid residues.

Although teeth affected by white areas of decalcification aren’t diseased, WSLs are more prone to becoming spots of decay if they’re not kept clean.

How does Icon resin filtration work?

Icon resin filtration is a gentle, targeted treatment that starts by carefully removing a thin layer of your child’s surface enamel where the WSLs occur. This 2-minute process is performed with a special tool that painlessly etches away the layer of enamel that’s blocking calcium and other ions from entering the tooth.

After the etching agent is rinsed away, a special drying agent is applied to the area. It’s during this part of the process that the WSL disappears, leaving consistently white enamel with no spots, lines, or streaks. For particularly stubborn WSLs, the etching and drying process may need to be repeated up to three times.

To finish the process, the team at Pettinato Children’s Dentistry applies a special resin infiltrant to the surface of your child’s tooth. This allows it to penetrate the enamel for three minutes before they use a special light to help the resin cure or harden, more quickly.

What’s the Icon treatment like?

Icon resin filtration is a simple and painless procedure that can usually be completed in less than an hour. It doesn’t involve drilling of any kind or require any anesthetic, so your child doesn’t have to worry about getting an injection or having their mouth numbed.

Each step in the Icon resin filtration treatment is easy and gentle, and the team at Pettinato Children’s Dentistry always lets their patients know what to expect each step of the way.
