Extractions Q & A

Why would my child need a tooth pulled?
Permanent teeth are designed to last a lifetime, but for many reasons, this doesn't always happen. For instance, your child’s tooth may need to be extracted because it's too decayed to keep. Illness, crowding, and trauma may all contribute to needing a tooth pulled.

Pediatric extractions may be necessary—for baby or adult teeth—for other reasons, including:

  • Risk of infection, like from a failed root canal
  • Advanced gum (periodontal) disease
  • Crowded or extra teeth
  • No room for third molars (wisdom teeth)

Our team understands that tooth extractions are not ideal and tries to avoid them whenever possible.

What should my child expect from an extraction procedure?
There are two main types of extractions: a simple extraction and a surgical extraction. Simple extractions are just like they sound. They're simple! Simple extractions are performed on visible teeth.

During this procedure, your pediatric dentist at Pettinato Children's Dentistry gently loosens your little one’s tooth with an instrument called an elevator. Then they use forceps to remove the tooth.

A surgical extraction can be more invasive. Your child’s tooth may have been broken off at the gumline, or it hasn’t yet come through the surface of their gums, as is typical with wisdom teeth.

During a surgical extraction, your dedicated pediatric dentist makes a small incision into your child’s gum to locate and take out the tooth in question. For larger teeth, your dentist may need to cut the tooth into pieces to be extracted.

Are tooth extractions painful?
In both a simple extraction and surgical extraction, your child’s dentist at Pettinato Children’s Dentistry gives them a local anesthetic, so they don’t feel any pain. If multiple teeth are being extracted during the same appointment, as is typical with wisdom teeth, your pediatric dentist may recommend oral sedation or nitrous oxide (laughing gas) to help put your child at ease.

How long is recovery from a tooth extraction?
Based on how many teeth your child had taken out and their individual condition, the initial healing period typically takes 1-2 weeks. Your child is likely going to experience swelling and soreness during this time, but the caring team at Pettinato Children's Dentistry counsels you on how to help your child recover quickly.
